I recently tested the Eight Sleep Saturn mattress with the Sleep Tracker purchased from Amazon. I was excited to try it, having reviewed and researched other sleep tech appliances.
The mattress comes rolled up tight in a box and takes about four hours to get to full expansion. It weighs around 75lbs, so you may need an extra pair of hands to maneuver it to where you want to sleep.
There are several mattresses offered by Eight Sleep. I tried the Saturn mattress since it is the most affordable they offer. It is an excellent quality mattress and feels luxurious and expensive, although the price is only $699! It seems constructed with superior quality materials, so you receive excellent value for money with this mattress.
One of the primary features of the mattress is the 3-layer technology which uses what the company calls a responsive layer for hip and back support, a transition layer to minimize movement, and a thick supportive foam base layer which helps comfort.
I found the mattress to be too firm for my taste. The Saturn feels similar to a firm memory foam Tempurpedic which I find difficult to roll over in. So, the Jupiter or Mars mattresses from Eight Sleep may be a more suitable option for me since both have larger internal layering.
If you are suffering from back problems which affect your sleep, the Saturn may be the ideal mattress for you.
One great thing about the central layer is your spouse or partner can’t feel any movement during the night, so you won’t be disrupting their sleep.
If you do decide to give the mattress a try, you’ll receive two free pillows and coupon offers of $50 off. They also have a 100-day guarantee, so if you don’t like the mattress or you aren’t sleeping better after 100 nights you can request a full refund without any restocking fees.
The Sleep Tracker Review
The highlight of the Eight Sleep mattress range is easily the Smart cover which connects with their Sleep Tracker app. It fits seamlessly over the mattress and the sensors track your heart rate, breathing, and movement. The system seems pretty accurate, and they boast a huge 200 data points and 10 million hours of sleep data collected.
It also controls the temperature of the bed, heating it to your ideal sleep temperature. A feature my wife and I love is that it can warm the bed to different temperatures on either side so if your sleep partner prefers a cooler temperature, there’s no problem. It would be nice if it had a cooling system built-in too, like the Bedjet, which would be perfect for unbearable summer nights.
The Sleep Tracker does not track snoring, so I run the SnoreLab app to monitor the results of my anti-snoring devices. SnoreLab helps me identify which snoring device is working best.
Using both apps shows how the snoring mouthpieces affect my snoring, total sleep time, number of times I woke up and if I toss and turn.
If you are just starting out with the SnoreRx, Zyppah, or zQuiet, it's important to monitor your sleep. The Sleep Tracker is perfect for that. I've used the SnoreRx for so long that I am accustomed to it and it doesn’t hinder my sleep.
If you are not interested in purchasing an Eight Sleep mattress, you can purchase the Sleep Tracker by itself and use it on your mattress and turn it into a smart bed.
It can also integrate with multiple home technologies; I connected it to Alexa which was perfect for switching the heat on and off and checking my data first thing in the morning without using the remote or even getting out of bed! But if you don’t have Alexa, it also connects with Nest and Phillips Hue.
I tested the tracker for a month, every night. Each morning it was interesting to look at the statistics like how frequently I tossed and turned during the night, or how often I spent in each sleep cycle. It also has a smart alarm which senses when your body is ready to wake up, so you wake up easily and more refreshed.
I find myself showing the app to friends quite often because it is a great conversation piece and it is honestly one of the best sleep tracker apps on the market. It is especially helpful if they are having sleep problems like insomnia or snoring. I simply show them the Eight tracker app on my phone and show them how it can help them with better sleep.
There are a couple of drawbacks. It disconnected a few nights which may have been due to app upgrades or bugs, but it did mean my sleep statistics weren’t 100% accurate for those nights. It also flashed when it disconnected which unfortunately woke me up.
The Sleep Tracker uses Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth, so if you have data restrictions or a poor signal, the tracker may be unable to obtain accurate data on some nights.
Finally, at $399 just for the smart mattress cover and the app, it is on the expensive side. However, I will continue to use this awesome tech! I really enjoy knowing my nightly sleep patterns, and it helps me to pinpoint certain days I feel sluggish because of lack of sleep.
The sleep tracker is something I will continue to use. It collects a fantastic amount of data that really helps you to recognize and acknowledge your sleep problem areas. The fact that it is compatible with Alexa is a bonus.
I would recommend the Saturn mattress to anyone who doesn’t mind a firm mattress or for anyone who sleeps on the cooler side. But, if you buy an Eight Sleep mattress make sure you include the Smart cover and app. The Sleep Tracker is an innovative and useful piece of technology for poor sleepers everywhere.
When I first heard about the innovative Eight Sleep pillow, I was very interested in trying it out, and I jumped at the opportunity to test it. This pillow is marketed as offering a fully customizable sleep experience, and I was curious to see if it would match up with my expectations.
Buying a pillow doesn’t have to be complicated, once you determine what kind of sleeper you are and the type of support you need.
About the Company
Eight Sleep is an up-and-coming company within the sleep and mattress industry. It was founded in 2014 and is located in New York City.
They are known for producing high-quality mattresses, pillows, and sleep accessories at reasonable prices, and for incorporating the latest in smart sleep technology into their designs.
As one example of this, Eight Sleep mattresses work with an app that measures and provides reports on sleep duration and quality, as well as offering the option to warm up your bed before getting into it. These technological innovations are driving sleep technology into the 21st century, and Eight Sleep is on the very cutting edge of this.
This brand has found special popularity with the Millennial generation, though the quality and comfort of its mattresses and pillows have garnered aficionados from all ages.
About the Eight Pillow
The Eight Pillow is designed with a simple principle in mind: one size doesn’t fit all. People have different needs and preferences when it comes to sleep, which are shaped by their sleeping position among other factors.
This pillow features a proprietary design that incorporates removable layers that can be rearranged in nine different ways to provide the amount of head and back support you require.
The highly adjustable design allows you to personally configure and reconfigure the inner pillow components to suit your desired firmness or softness.
Features of the Eight Pillow
The Eight Pillow has three layers that can be arranged in various orders to create a soft, pillow, a firm pillow or a thin or thicker pillow.
It includes a 1” cushion, a 2” cushion, and a 1” layer of memory foam. They are all encased in a simple, breathable cotton pillowcase.
The memory foam layer is very dense and firm. It provides perfectly molded support to the head and upper spine.
The cushion layers come in two layers of thickness. These layers of cushion are filled with shredded foam pieces and provide fluffy support that can be layered or used separately for ultimate comfort.
Customizable Pillow Comparison: Eight Pillow vs. Nectar Pillow
The Nectar pillow is another customizable foam-based pillow that contains chunks of foam of different sizes and shapes.
The Nectar pillow is more customizable than the Eight pillow, but you end up with memory foam all over the place when you dump it out, and it can be quite messy and disorganized to assemble and disassemble.
The Eight pillow in comparison is a good pillow and has relatively easy adjustability. This provides a simpler user experience.
Both are priced at $75 which is a reasonable price for the quality and adaptability of the products.
My Experience with the Eight Pillow
This pillow delivered on its scheduled delivery date, and I happened to have guests in town and staying in my home. This ended up working out great, as more heads meant I had multiple testers and opinions.
First, I gave the pillow to my father-in-law to test. The first night he tried it, he said it he thought it was good. He slept on it in the same configuration as it arrived, with the memory foam on the bottom. He said he likes a firmer pillow when he sleeps with Philips Respironics sleep apnea device. A firmer pillow is more comfortable while wearing his CPAP machine.
The second night, he tried the pillow a different way, by turning it over to the firmer side. This was much better, and almost as firm as he likes his pillows.
Next, my wife tried sleeping on the Eight pillow for a few nights. She really liked it, because I removed two of the three pouches. This made it a very thin pillow, with memory foam only, so it was still comfortable.
What I Thought About the Eight Pillow
When I used the Eight Pillow, I configured it for a medium firmness. I used all of the cushions provided and did not remove any, and I stacked them on top of the memory foam, so the foam was on the bottom layer closest to the mattress.
This configuration seemed to work exceptionally well for me. I found I could have a comfortable and relaxing sleep using this pillow. I did not wake up at any point during the night. I enjoyed being able to reconfigure the pillow to suit my sleep needs. I also thought the cotton covering of the pillow was soft, comfortable, and breathable next to my skin.
If you are unsure of what pillow firmness or thickness you want, you can buy this pillow or the Nectar pillow. Both feature an innovative design and provide excellent adjustability for your sleeping position.
Also, buy this pillow if you want to sleep on a very thin pillow. My wife uses this pillow because it is almost impossible to find a pillow thin enough for what she likes.
Eight is a good guest pillow as well, in large part due to its ease of personalization. You can simply ask your guests if they like their pillow firm or soft, thick or thin, and in a matter of seconds adjust the pillow for them. I tried this with several of our house guests, and they were impressed with this feature.
Overall, this pillow is helpful due to its customizability and is an excellent option for sleepers with very specific needs in a pillow that traditional pillow designs are unable to meet. You can purchase the Ultimate Eight Sleep Pillow here.
